The Church House, 149 Sutherlin Ave

The Church House, 149 Sutherlin Ave

Like 133 Sutherlin Ave, F.X. Burton acquired the lot of land at 149 Sutherlin Avenue in 1894. In 1905, Mr. Burton’s widow, Alice, sold the land for $700 to J.A. Jones.

John Anderson Jones was born in Caswell County, North Carolina in December of 1867 to Richard Henry and Martha Blackwell Jones. He moved to Danville in 1900 and took up work in the hardware business, making it his career and establishing himself under the name of Mobley-Graham and Jones. John married Alice Crowder in 1893. The couple had one son, Harry Eskildson Jones.

In 1913, the Jones left Sutherlin Avenue for a new home at 220 Mt. Vernon Ave where the couple lived until Alice died in 1928 and John in 1956. The Sutherlin Avenue home was sold in 1913 to Laila Blair Church. Laila was born in Pittsylvania County, Virginia in 1887. She married James McCain Church, also of Pittsylvania County, in June of 1908. James was born in 1880 and was employed in the grocery business most of his life. “Jimmy Church’s Store” as it was nicknamed was said to have been universally known in Danville. After Laila died in 1938, James married a second time, but the marriage was not long to be enjoyed. After falling seriously ill in December of 1942, Mr. Church was driven over icy roads to Richmond where they determined he required surgery  for a diverticular abscess. The surgery was not a success, and he died on Christmas Eve, leaving the home and all his property to his second wife Catherine. Catherine remained in the house for another ten years before selling it in August of 1948 to John and Annie Mannooch.

John Archer Mannooch was born March 17, 1895 in Petersburg, Virginia, the son of Charles W. and Elizabeth Dyer Mannooch. Mr. Mannooch was first employed by the Danville and Western Railway before entering into the trucking business. He was also a teacher at the Danville Technical Institute. In 1924, he married Annie May Jefferson. Annie was born in Pittsylvania County, Virginia in 1892. She was active in the Red Cross during World War II. The couple resided in the Sutherlin Avenue home until Mr. Mannooch’s death in 1983. Six months later, Mrs. Mannooch sold the home to Michael and Margarita Rogers. Over the next five years, the house would change hands several times before being purchased in 1995 by Tedd and Kimberly Manning. In 1995 it became the home of Butch and Robyn Dalton.

Michael and Rachel Huggins are presently the owners who live there with their three daughters.
