The time approaching Halloween 2021 in the Old West End will be busier and bigger than ever. Mark your calendars because there will be plenty to do.
There will be a prize given for the best decorated house in the Old West End. A panel of judges will select the winner based on curb appeal and creativity. Winners will be announced at HOWEL (see below). Participants should have their house decorated no later than Thursday, October 14th to be sure their house is judged. While not required, homeowners may text or call David Worrell at 434-548-3373 after their house is decorated to make sure it is judged.
Ghosts and Gravestones of Grove Street Cemetery is an annual historical walking tour with re-enactors by The Danville Museum of Fine Arts & History in partnership with the Smokestack Theatre Company. Four performances will be held each day from October 21st to 23rd. Advance tickets from the Museum are recommended.
Sunday, October 24th, will feature the Haunted History Tour by Friends of the Old West End (FOWE). This one hour and 15-minute stroll tells the history of some of the district’s homes and their goings-on. Meet at Crema & Vine on Sunday, October 24, at 5:15 p.m. The tour ends at the Grove Street cemetery. Reservations are not required. A donation of $10 for FOWE members, $20 for non-members is requested.
Saturday, October 30th will be the first annual Halloween in the Old West End Lanternfest (HOWEL). The Lanternfest will be a fun event transitioning from a family-friendly afternoon of games, food, and contests to a more adult-oriented evening of music and dancing. The event’s highlight will be a lantern lighting ceremony that will start a tradition that will last for ages. There will be no charge for admission though additional sponsors are needed and will be recognized with a gift. (Contact David Worell.) There will be more details in the Old West End Gazette as the date approaches.
Of course, Sunday, October 31st, will feature the usual trick-or-treating. If you’ll be ready with candy, send your address for inclusion in the October 28th Gazette.
