In case you missed it, “Visit SoSi” was unveiled last week as the new regional tourism brand.
What’s a SoSi? SoSi is a fun, flexible, and memorable way to introduce visitors to Danville, Pittsylvania County, and the surrounding region. In part, it’s an acronym for how the State tourism office describes our region – the Southside. The term “southside” is historic, dating from colonial times and then meaning south of the James River. More recently, Southside has come to describe the Piedmont region above the fall line – the area surrounding Danville.
SoSi is also a play on sounds or words. “So,” come “see” all the great things to do in Danville and its surrounds.
Among the many things to see here is the Old West End Historic District (OWE). The OWE is prominently included on the Visitors Map (available at the Visitor Center) and the in soon-to-be-released website and 48-page Visitors Guide. (See the Guide online here.) The work of Friends of the Old West End and OWE residents to place QR Code markers throughout the district supports the new emphasis on tourism.
From testing, “Visit SoSi” emerged as the best slogan to promote our region. With the opening of the temporary casino, the Danville Museum in our midst, and the growth in tourism, we in the OWE should expect to see more visitors on our streets. Let’s welcome them heartily for their contribution to Danville’s economy and vitality.
